Always (Wesson Rebel MC Book 1) by Shyla Colt

Always book 1Always (Wesson Rebel MC Book 1) by Shyla Colt

Let me start this review off with this, if there hadn’t been 4 POVs and bouncing from the past about 2 or 3 yrs ago, then to the present, then to the past a couple months ago and then again to the present this would be a 3.5 star read for me. I really struggled with how it was organized and felt there was no flow, which was incredibly frustrating.

This was my first MC read and it won’t be my last. I felt that part of the story was written decently. From what I know about that lifestyle, it’s not for the faint of heart so I knew there would be some dark spots in this story. It took me up until 67% of the story to even know why the main characters were upset with what they were dealing with in the present. Then the present sort of jumped ahead leaving me feeling like I missed something. Which is hard.

The main characters are Dallas, Cora, Danny and Rowan. When I read the blurb, it only mentions Dallas and Cora so it was sort of frustrating to find out that this is really 4 main characters. Danny and Rowan are just as important to the story line as Dallas and Cora. But this story is more than just a love story between Dallas and Cora. It’s a love story between 4 people. Love and friendship. The sex scenes were ok, but if you aren’t ok with swapping or sharing, this may not be the read for you.

I never really connected with any of the characters that much besides Rowan and I think it’s because she’s the only one I was able to picture in my mind. There wasn’t much description of the characters except for her. With some more description this could have helped readers connect with the other characters better.

I really feel that if this was written in a 2 person POV in the present with some flashbacks to help support the story it could have flowed much easier. It’s not a horrible read and I’m curious how this story ends (this is book 1 and it ends in a cliffhanger). I may pick up the next in the series.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Have I read the books? I have. Do I think they are literary works of absolute genius? Nope. I am a Twilight fan (waves that geek freak flag high and proud), I took the books at what they were…entertainment. Hearing that there was something written based on the Twilight books but with adult characters piqued my interest. My friends were already reading the books, so I waited patiently to borrow the books. There was a ridiculous waiting list at the library for these books. I wasn’t about to wait that long.

I get my hands on the books, my friends seemed to really enjoy them, so I’m excited. I read them and they are ok. I’ve read better. There wasn’t much to the plot for me. I don’t mind reading more racy books, but there has to be a solid plot. If you can’t take away the sex and still have a solid story then it will lose my interest very quickly.

The redeeming qualities of the books was the journey the two main characters took. You got to watch these 2 people grow. Christian learning to love and accept love and Ana coming into her own, not being a doormat any longer. That was interesting to watch unfold.

Now to where I have been getting peeved about. I’m on FB, more than I probably should be. My newsfeed is filled with either “OH MY GOSH!!!! 50 SHADES OF GREY IS THE BEST EVER!!!” or “50 Shades is ruining marriages” “That trashy movie is promoting rape and abuse” I respect people’s opinions and I know that generally…people won’t be respecting mine. I’ve kept quiet about the books and the movie. What is getting me so angry is that no where in these books is there rape. There are sexual acts that are performed between consenting adults. CONSENTING. By definition…that’s not rape. Is the relationship between Christian and Ana a shining example of a healthy relationship? Absolutely not. Nor does it depict the BDSM lifestyle well at all. What people fail to understand, the submissive in these relationships really hold all of the power. Yes they submit to their dominant when it comes to their bedroom activities. But they decide when it ends, what they are comfortable with, what will NOT be tolerated at all. That doesn’t sound like a doormat to me, that doesn’t sound like a person with NO power. People sitting there all high and mighty saying that pretty much anything besides one sex position is degrading and no mentally healthy person would subject themselves to any of what is depicted in the book. Guess what? They do, all the time. Many have zero issues. Many attend your church, teach your children, bag your groceries and perform your check ups in the clinic. When it is between two people who care for each other deeply and makes them happy….how can we sit there and judge them? We can’t.

I admit that maybe I’m a bit biased since I read quite a bit of these sorts of books. Do I struggle with seeing the posts saying that no good Christian could find enjoyment out of them…yup I do. Romance readers already face a stigma of the genre of books they love. Throw in books that have BDSM and it just adds another layer of the judgment. I have people who I consider friends who write these types of books (romance erotica) and they are good people. They aren’t some devil worshipers. They have families, some attend church, they are just great people who I enjoy interacting with on a pretty regular basis.  I’m a Christian. I feel pretty solid in where I am in my faith even though I read romance. If people want to judge me, that’s fine. They are just weeding my garden of friends for me.

More than likely I won’t be seeing the movie. I read the books and that was enough for me. Were some parts pretty hot, sure. But there are other books that are better in the smut dept in my opinion. So off of this soapbox of mine for the night and I’m going to finish up a book and start working on a review. At some point I’d like to write out some more ideas and plots for what I’m working on. So you all have a good evening and take care.  Remember that because what somebody reads for enjoyment and entertainment isn’t your cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

Wise woman once told me we can’t get mad at somebody for doing something we ourselves wouldn’t do. It’s a good saying to keep tucked away. 🙂

Free Books…who doesn’t love getting free books?

I don’t know about you, but getting a great deal on some books is thrilling. Getting an email informing me that I’m getting 3 copies of a book from a new to me author, like winning the lottery. Seriously.

I corner my husband in the kitchen and tell him I have great news. He automatically thinks “She’s got a job!” (though I’m not looking, he doesn’t want me to look, so this gal isn’t looking)…the look on his face when I tell him I got an email from Penguin Publishing. Then the question, “They’re going to publish your book?!”  No, that’s not even close to being done, don’t be silly. “I got FREE BOOKS!!” He just stands there looking at me, “So that’s your good news? No point to this story?” He’s not a bookworm so he just doesn’t get it. But I do, I know my fellow bookworms will get it. FREE BOOKS!!

So I will be soon having a giveaway to sort of pay it forward so to speak. Watch for an update on that and I’ll make sure to post to my FB page as well.

Oh!! Ha, ADD here…The book I will be getting is Anne Bishop’s Written In Red. She’s a new to me author, so I’ll be reading and reviewing as soon as I can.

Netflix, why must you get in the way of my reading time?

Normally I’m one of those people who can read, watch TV and play Words With Friends all at the same time without spilling my beverage (talented huh?). But lately, Netflix has sucked me in. Between American Horror Story (seasons 1 and 4 down, 2 and 3 are up next) and Black Mirror…I just can’t. They NEED my undivided attention.

I’m late to the party on AHS, but I’m hooked. In love with it, if these were books I’d devour them in 1 week. Are they books? I should do some digging, because if they are or if there are some written that are similar…I’ll 1-click the crap out of them. Seriously. AHS has me looking at my husband and saying “What?!” several times through each episode. I love how you just never really know what is going to happen, or when you guess but your guess is sort of horrifying and you hope it’s not gonna pan out but does.

Black Mirror. All I can say is holy crap. The feels dude. THE FEELS. The first episode I wasn’t sure at all about how this was going to pan out. Pig screwing? Seriously?! What I told my husband about the first episode, “If I had a thought bubble, it would have read ‘DAFUQ?!?!?!’ because I had no clue what I was watching, it was that messed up.”  But the 2nd episode had me sobbing (I’m not a crier AT ALL, that gal who’s laughing when somebody gets blown to bits…that’s me). So I was only able to do 2 episodes each night. 3 episodes per season and there is only 2 seasons. So it was a quick watch. The first and last episodes were my least favorites, but the rest were fantastic! Very Twilight Zone but the sort that pulls at your feelers. If you haven’t watched these yet, watch them. Then hit me up to talk about them because they are dark and interesting and I know of nobody else who has seen these and I want to talk about them!!!

I am bound and determined to get my Burned by KMM finished. I started off strong but life (and Netflix) got in the way *shakes fist at Netflix*.

It’s been a long time…..

I was a book review blogger once, I was pretty active as well. But life got in the way. My husband took a job in another state and I had to not only get our home in Minnesota sold, but pack up said house on my own while my husband was already in Montana. It was a monumental task…but I did it, while taking care of 4 kids. Thankfully I did have help from a few wonderful friends, one gal from church was coming every week. I will forever be thankful for her.

All that said, we are now in Montana. It’s beautiful, it’s new, it’s scary. We’ve moved 3 times in the yr we’ve been here but I do believe we are settled now. I’m hoping that now that we’re settled, I can start the very scary process of making friends. Remember back when you were a kid, you’d push some kid down and say, “Hey, we’re friends now.” and it was some life long friendship? That’s highly frowned upon as an adult. So I’m left to try to find other ways to make friends that won’t come with an assault charge and a pair of handcuffs. Since I am slow to make friends, my books have been keeping me company (and numerous games of Words With Friends….seriously, that is like crack for a words lover). I should have been keeping a log of what I have read and all of the feels that came along with each book, but I haven’t. I will now.

Something else that I have started while out here is writing again. I didn’t realize how much I missed it or how lost I could become in a story. Seriously, sit down to write a few pages and a few hours go by and I wonder where my time had gone. Though slow going, it’s going. And that’s all I really can ask for right? It’s exciting to think that I’m getting these stories and characters on to paper (or my computer screen I should say)…but taking care of a family of 6 definitely makes it difficult. I’ll be posting about that progress in addition to the books I’m reading.

I’ve widened my reading from mostly PNR to pretty much all Romances, except historical. No matter how hard I try I just can’t get past the first 5 or 6 chapters in a historical romance. I appreciate the research and effort that goes into them…I think they must be incredibly difficult to write to stay accurate to the period. Just not my cup of tea.

Hopefully, I will be able to sit at least once a week and share something. Whether it’s a review, a thought, something stupid or crazy that my kids (let’s be honest here…myself) have done.

Enjoy your day!!

I was thinking….which is never a good thing

As I’m sitting here drinking my coffee and trying to wake up while my boys are recreating the last Monday Night RAW they watched I’m thinking. Which is difficult when you aren’t a morning person.
I’m going through my FB newsfeed to search for the Kindle Freebie postings. I generally find a few, most I have downloaded already.  Should I start posting freebies on my blog to let others know? Should I not do that?

Also, I’m thinking I need to do a giveaway of something soon. I’ll think of what to giveaway, but it’ll be good 🙂

Deziree Davanzatti is a thief by trade and to keep herself occupied between jobs she owns and operates Onyx, a trendy nightclub for the supernatural citizens of New Your City.
What else would a 400-something yr old demon-human hybrid do with her spare time?
Following a drunken night of questionable decisions, the vampire Michael “Vegas” Tremayne leaves town with no explanation. Dez is left wondering if they made a mistake and if it cost her a price she wasn’t willing to pay – her best friend and confidant.
When he returns after two weeks of no contact, he comes bearing grave news that could potentially change the world forever….or end it all together. To make matters worse, they suspect that someone they know may be behind it all.
An extremely dangerous chain of events has been set in motion and it is up to Dez and Vegas, with the help of his brother Lucas, to find a way to stop it.

From the author of Burning, the short story prequel, comes The Devil You Know, the first full length novel in the Demon Legacy series by J.M. Gregoire.

I am thrilled to be part of this virtual blog tour for The Devil You Know by J.M. Gregoire! I started reading and I couldn’t put this down. Just wasn’t possible. It was love at first use of the word bibliophile.  And as many of you know, having 4 kids makes it difficult to find the time to read anything…let alone devour something in 1 sitting. So you just know it was THAT GOOD.

The Devil You Know is the first book of the Demon Legacy Series. Many of my friends know that I have a hard time liking the first book of any series because it’s just too much setting up for the rest of the series. Gregoire manages to do that AND keep me turning page after page because I had to know what was going on. Once the action started it just didn’t stop.  This was an AMAZING first book to this series and I can’t wait to see what book 2 holds in store for us. I’m addicted.

The characters have depth of emotion and I was able to connect to them. You can tell that there is a lot of caring and love that is between these beings. Dez is my favorite type of heroine, she’s kick ass and not afraid to apologize when she’s wrong. Plus she loves guns…how hot is that? Vegas is the perfect alpha male for this story, hot, independent and guess what?! He can apologize when he is wrong too! He trust Dez and Lucas and doesn’t have to be the one to jump into the fray. I love men like that. Lucas is no slouch either. 🙂 So much happens in this book that I don’t want to say too much to spoil anything, but globe trotting to save the world, sacrifices, love, loss, snarkiness…it has it all.

I had to share this tid bit because not only do they kick ass, they are snarky and funny on top of that.

Michael and Lucas returned to Deziree’s apartment and found her sitting on the couch, cradling a box of bullets. She was loading her black and silver Heckler and Koch USP 45.”Most girls spend their time doing girly things like painting their toenails,” Lucas said. “Yours cuddles with ammunition and firearms.”

I LOVED that and it had me laughing out loud, because, well…that’s just awesome 😀

The action was fast paced, the flow of the book was spot on and the plot has readers hooked from the get go. Definitely a 5 star read.

Make sure that you pick this gem up and make sure to follow the virtual blog tour, a few other sites will be having giveaways!
